I really like the concept. Ask your true supporters, fans, customers to realize the next big project which they will like. But sometimes I have the feeling that especially in music crowd founding might not go as good as possible or to say it simple: People unfortunately have just the attitude expect to get music for free. I am not saying that everyone is participating in peer to peer platforms and doing copyright violations but music as a good is nowadays just available in a way as it was never before and most people seem to forget the intrinsic value of music. After I helped to build up the band in Legend and have some experience about music and the cost of creating music I want to share another story that brings me to my sad conclusion:
There is this German Band called Mock Unit. In 2009 they released their first video ready to mock which was followed by is doch kärb (2010) and seid ihr dabei?! (2011). Until now these videos have generated almost half a millions views on youtube. You think that is nothing in comparison to psy’s gangnam style. But consider that the band has a very unique style:

  • Their lyrics consist almost exclusively of swearwords, there is a lot of sexism in the text and they seem to make a lot of fun of a certain part of our society. Until now I hope that this is satire and a way of expressing disappointment about the existence of problems like sexism in our socity. (Otherwise I would reconsider my positive feelings towards the band)
  • They sing in a very local dialect which only few Germans would understand right away (I would guess about 1-2 Mio.)
  • The musical style itself is also not something for everybody and rather speaking to young people.

Yet The band has quite some success in this very small target group.

  • Their Facebook profile has about 5k fans (I assume most of them living closer than 50 km around Mainz)
  • Fans start to take own videos in the same style but with other songs
  • Concerts are sold old. 4 month ago they had a concert in red cat and had to send home people because the venue was completely sold out.
  • Fans are dressing up in the same “trashy” style and when I did the same and walked through Mainz people on the street would associate me with this band.

All this together I conclude that this band (which obviously is not casted by some label) has a strong fan base in a very small region and also has not really a commercial interest but just wants to continue to create music for their fans. Now the mock unit wants to create a second record and decided to go for a crowd founding campaign on startnext (basically the german kickstarter). They provided a good nice advertising video in their style and also the rewards are fitting the style. Everything is really authentic.
Also the Mock Unit only asks for 6000 Euro. Which according to the number of Facebook fans is an average of only 1.2 Euro per fan. Apparently this seems impossible to achieve. Currently the band has not even collected 2k euro which I really do not understand. I don’t ask you to support this band or become a fan of. I just think it is incredible that a band that has delivered music and videos, that  has a solid fan base, that is able to sell out venues is not able to collect 1.2 Euro per Facebookfan for the sake of creating a new record and video.
I think it is really a shame in our society that culture became apparently so worthless. By the way I would have much more faith in a musicians crowdfounding campaign if he would promise to release the record under creative commons share alike by licence. In this way I would know that in return of my support I would not only be able to expect some entertainment but I would also obtain the legal right to use the material which I directly founded.
For those who know the band and like the band I created a video using their style in order to animate other fans to think about if they really do not want to support the band:

Open Source Facebook music streaming App for free download! https://www.rene-pickhardt.de/open-source-facebook-music-streaming-app-for-free-download/ https://www.rene-pickhardt.de/open-source-facebook-music-streaming-app-for-free-download/#comments Tue, 03 Jan 2012 14:54:14 +0000 http://www.rene-pickhardt.de/?p=1005 In an earlier post I have explained the need for a Facebook streaming app that has to be enhanced with some features in order to create viral word of mouth effects. Together with Yann Leretaille and Robert Naumann we programmed the facebook API and developed such an app for my band In legend. Today ( even though xmas is gone and 2012 has already started ) it is the time for me to share the source code of this app.

have a look at the app here:

Features and Problems

  • works on facebook and on any other webpage
  • enables setting more and more songs free for streaming while more people install the app (in order to spread the word)
  • users need to connect (with facebook or via email adress) in order to listen
  • some lightweight statistics
  • encrypted flash player (not open source yet) that makes it hard to download the music (Though I myself have some moral problems with this kind of feature. But well it is how the industry works…)
  • Slideshow of pictures to improve listening experience
  • optimized usability for high conversion rates

The app runs on PHP, MySQL, JavaScript (MooTools) and you will need your own webspace in order to host it

A kind warning

The App was developed with a lot of time pressure and we had some nasty bugs that needed to be fixed. That is why the source code is messed up with some really fast and dirty quick fixes. Afterwards I never really had the time to clean up the source and make a good documentation. As my PhD progresses this situation will not change in the foreseeable future. Since my prediction says that Facebook will be overrun by Google+ within this year it is more than time to share the app!
The good part: most of the stuff can be reused once Google+ opens its API and the app can be transformed to a great social network.

Download your open source Youtube insights statistics tool https://www.rene-pickhardt.de/youtube-statistics-and-analytics-tool/ https://www.rene-pickhardt.de/youtube-statistics-and-analytics-tool/#respond Sun, 13 Nov 2011 11:54:45 +0000 http://www.rene-pickhardt.de/?p=884 Today I have figured out that you can download a lot of statistics about your on videos from Youtube. That is actually very nice since I was always sceptical that you miss the knowledge of who is watching your videos once you do not host them yourself. Unfortunately there are some drawbacks to these statistics:

  • Youtube only lets you download statistics for a periode of 30 days. So if you want to download your statistics for an entire year you have to download 12 files.
  • Next the statistics are only available as rawdata and you need to process them in order to receive some useful information.

For me and in legend these statistics are very interesting for three reasons:

  1. We want to figure out from which websites people come to youtube in order to watch our video. This is important for us so we can contact the webmasters of theses sites as soon as new videos are available.
  2. We want to to analyze if the user behaviour is influenced by our Youtube ballads n bullets dvd and if so we want to see weather the influence is actually positive (which we of course expect).
  3. We want to see from which videos our video is linked as a related video. This could enable us to have some really useful collaborations.

Since there are so many reasons to process the statistics I wrote a little python script in order to analyze the statistics and retrieve them in a human readable format. Because open source is really important for our society and the web I made the decission to share this little tool with everyone on the web under a GPL licence (which means you can use it for free!).
So feel free to download this little python script and run it on your website. It is also avail able in the google code svn repository

Screencast and instructions:

Since the script is only displaying some information there is almost no configuration to be done. But I know from the time when my programming skills were not as good as today that it was always hard to run the source code of someone else. To make it even easier for you I created a little screencast that explains you how to download the programm, How to download the statistics from youtube and how to run the statistics tool.

Oh by the way this is some background knowledge about youtube insights can be found at the official youtube data api documentation
I hope you like that tool. If you find some bugs or you have some suggestions I would be more than happy to hear from you about your thoughts!
