Will Wikipedia replace scientific journals?

We all know that the review process of scientific journals is a good thing that served a certain purpose in the time it was created. In this video Jimmy Wales – well known as the Wikipedia founder – talks about the impact of new technologies and the web on the traditional concept of scientific journals and other (related) industries.

Even though Jimmy Wales for sure has a solid argument when he says that the processes in scientific journals are outdated I personally don’t think they will be replaced too soon.
Do you think new technologies are changing science yet?

  1. I think the answer to your question lies near the following comment:”Somewhere at the fringe of science, someone will start using wiki publishing for science publishing. My guess is, after much resistance from the established system, a new wiki-based system will slowly be validated and will eventually grow into a viable alternative to the current system. For people in the current system, there is no point in developing the new system and incentives actually exist to sabotage and work against the new system. What is best for science has very little influence on the dynamics of this interaction between the existing system of science and the new possible wiki-based system. The dynamics are governed by cultural momentum and the natural energy barrier that slows the development of any new idea or system.”
